The Metropolis of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) has introduced that USA-based British composer Anna Clyne has been appointed composer-in-residence for the 2026/27 season. Her work with the CBSO will embody main symphonic performances, a world premiere fee and a big new recording venture.

Live performance highlights embody Stressed Oceans in a programme performed by the CBSO’s music director Kazuki Yamada in September 2026, in addition to her saxophone concerto, Glasslands, carried out by CBSO collaborative artist Jess Gillam below the baton of Alpesh Chauhan, with a Decca recording of the work forming a part of the venture.

In March 2027, the CBSO will give the world premiere of Clyne’s new Viola Concerto – Resonant Types – co-commissioned by the orchestra for Lawrence Energy. Her piece Night time Ferry may even be carried out as a part of the CBSO’s Halloween themed Household Live performance in October 2026.

Clyne’s residency will prolong past the live performance platform, with collaborations together with a venture with Birmingham Modern Music Group, academic visits to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Shireland CBSO Academy, and involvement within the CBSO’s Orchestral Residency Scheme with younger musicians in July 2027, that includes her work PALETTE – a concerto for Augmented Orchestra.

Clyne’s cello concerto DANCE was carried out by Nationwide Youth Orchestra as a part of Shimmer, its January 2026 programme, and she or he was awarded her first Ivor Novello Award for Orbits, a bit commissioned and carried out by The Sixteen and Harry Christophers setting the poem I Reside My Life In Rising Orbits by Rilke in a translation by American poet Robert Bly [see my review]. Her piece, The Years, was carried out on the BBC Proms in August 2025 by the Danish Nationwide Symphony Orchestra, conductor Fabio Luisi as a part of the orchestra’s centenary celebrations [see my review].

Clyne’s announcement at composer-in-residence comes after current bulletins of Ilan Volkov as principal visitor conductor from 2026 to 2029; pianist Alice Sara Ott and saxophonist Jess Gillam as collaborative artists for 2026–28; composer and producer Rushil Ranjan as collaborative artist for 2025-27; together with the affirmation that Kazuki Yamada will stay music director till at the least the top of the 2028-29 Season
